The drought-bred couch that holds its colour through winter
TifTuf is a fine-leafed couch bred for drought. It uses around 38% less water than other varieties, which makes it the pick for water-restricted suburbs or anyone who doesn't want a sprinkler running all summer. It's the same grass used on golf courses and sports fields, so it takes wear and repairs itself, and it holds its colour through a Melbourne winter far longer than most warm-season lawns.
Bred in a research programme, certified for genetic purity
TifTuf came out of the University of Georgia's turfgrass breeding programme, and the 38% water saving was measured in University of Georgia and USDA trials rather than invented for a brochure. Every bit of TifTuf grown in Australia must be AusGAP certified to guarantee the genetics, and it's sold only through the Lawn Solutions network. Ours is grown in Victoria and comes with a 10-year Product Warranty Certificate, emailed to you once it's in the ground.

Common questions
How much watering does it actually need?
Less than most. TifTuf saves around 38% on water compared to other varieties, and needs only minimal water to establish — which is what makes it the pick for water-restricted suburbs. For the first 2 to 4 weeks keep the soil under the lawn damp while the roots take. After that it copes with far longer gaps than you'd expect.
How much mowing and maintenance?
Medium overall — less fertiliser and less water than most lawns, but more mowing while it's growing hard. Once a week through spring and summer, sometimes twice if you're keeping it short. In the cooler months it slows right down and you'll only mow as needed.
How do I top dress and fertilise it?
If you're levelling out bumps, use washed sand. For everything else a sandy loam like our turf loam is the better choice, because it carries some organic matter as well as levelling — no more than a centimetre at a time, with the grass tips still showing. Then fertilise at the start of each season with Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser, which suits TifTuf as well as the buffalo varieties.

The base under a lawn that lasts
Turf Loam is a screened sandy loam for the job underneath the grass: levelling the ground before new turf goes down, top-dressing an established lawn, or preparing a bed for seed. It is sandy enough to drain and level easily, with enough body to hold the moisture a new lawn needs while it roots. Get this layer right and the turf on top establishes deep and even, which is what makes a lawn cope with a Melbourne summer on less water.
The same soil we lay under our own lawns
When our team installs an instant lawn, Turf Loam is what goes down first, so it is chosen and screened for exactly that: an even, free-draining sandy loam with no lumps or sticks, that rakes flat and firms up under a roller. We don't add compost or anything else to it, because a lawn base wants structure and drainage rather than richness. Feed the grass from the top once it's in; give the roots a clean, level bed underneath.

How much do I need?
| Depth | 1 m³ covers | For a 40 m² lawn | For an 80 m² lawn |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 mm top-dress | 100 m² | 0.4 m³ — order 1 m³ | 0.8 m³ — order 1 m³ |
| 20 mm heavy top-dress | 50 m² | 0.8 m³ — order 1 m³ | 1.6 m³ — order 2 m³ |
| 50 mm under turf | 20 m² | 2 m³ — order 2 m³ | 4 m³ — order 4.5 m³ |
| 100 mm under turf | 10 m² | 4 m³ — order 4.5 m³ | 8 m³ — order 9 m³ |
Length × width × depth (in metres) = cubic metres. Loam firms up by 10–15% once it's rolled and watered, so round up, and if you're between sizes, go up a half-metre. Spare loam is handy for top-dressing the lawn next spring.
Common questions
Do I need Turf Loam under new turf?
If the existing ground is level, drains well and you can rake it to a fine, firm surface, you can lay straight onto it. Most Melbourne yards aren't like that: they are clay, or uneven, or full of the old lawn's roots. In that case 50–100 mm of Turf Loam gives the new turf a clean, level, free-draining bed to root into, and it is the single biggest thing that separates a lawn that takes from one that struggles.
Can the loam come on the same delivery as my turf?
No, and you don't want it to. Turf is cut fresh at the farm and sent straight to you, while Turf Loam comes from our yard on a soil truck, so they are two deliveries with two delivery fees. Order the loam first, spread and level it a day or two ahead, and have the turf arrive onto a bed that is ready, so it goes down the day it is cut.
How do I top-dress a lawn with it?
Mow low first, spread 10–20 mm across the lawn, then work it in with the back of a rake or a stiff broom until the grass tips show through. Water it in. Do it in spring or early summer when the grass is growing hard, so it covers the loam in a few weeks. Kikuyu, couch and buffalo all take it well; just don't bury the leaves completely.
What happens on delivery day?
The truck tips the load where you tell us — a driveway, nature strip or front lawn. Put a tarp down if you want a clean pickup afterwards, and let us know about tight access, overhead wires or a steep drive when you order. One truck carries up to 4 m³ of soil, so orders over 4 m³ are two or more trips and we'll confirm the cost with you first.

The soil you plant food straight into
Veggie Mix is a rich, heavy soil blended for growing vegetables. It's a premium soil mixed with our own Dig In Compost, so it has the body to hold water through a Melbourne summer and the life to feed hungry, shallow-rooted plants that are asked to produce a crop in a season. Fill a bed with it, water it in, and plant the same weekend.
Blended at Keilor Park, with compost we make ourselves
Veggie Mix is two things: a premium soil, and Dig In Compost, which we make at our Keilor Park yard from Melbourne green waste. The green waste is pulverised, composted hot for a month so weed seeds and pathogens are dead, then screened. That finished compost is what makes the mix ready to plant into the day it arrives, rather than something you wait on. We blend the two here, by the batch, and deliver it loose by the cubic metre.

Common questions
Can I plant straight into it?
Yes. The compost in Veggie Mix is finished, not raw, so there's nothing that needs to break down before roots go in. Spread it, water it well so it settles, and plant the same day or the next.
Veggie Mix or Botanical Blend?
Veggie Mix if you're growing food: it's heavier and richer because vegetables are fed hard and picked in a season. Botanical Blend if it's flowers, shrubs or a general garden bed, where a lighter, freer-draining soil suits plants that live in it for years. If a bed does both, Veggie Mix is the safer pick.
Do I need to add anything?
Not for the first season. After that, veggies pull a lot out of the ground, so fork a few centimetres of Dig In Compost through the bed between crops, and keep 50 mm of mulch on top so the soil doesn't dry out and bake in summer.
What happens on delivery day?
The truck tips the load loose where you've asked for it, so lay a tarp down first and it's far easier to barrow and clean up. The truck needs to get in safely, so if your street is narrow or the driveway is tight, tell us when you order and we'll plan around it. Orders over 4 m³ of soil take two trips, which we'll confirm with you before the day.
