Couch Grass Tips
How to de-thatch prickly winter growth of Couch varieties of grasses
The best time to de-thatch is now, when your lawn is actively growing and the soil is moderately moist.
Over time, little bits and pieces of grass die and gather just above the soil – this is called “thatch”. Usually this breaks down over the course of time, but if there is too much thatch, it will form a barrier keeping the moisture and air from going where your grass needs it to remain healthy.
Dethatching removes the thick layer of decaying plant material so that air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer can reach the soil and your lawn can drain more effectively.
In short, this means that you will need to take the height of your grass down each time you mow (over the course of 3 cuttings) by lowering the blade of your mower a little each time. This will give your grass a chance to re-generate and have fresh new growth by removing the prickly dead pieces of grass that have accumulated during the winter months whilst your turf was dormant.
It is best to to fertilise with Sir Walter Fertiliser after de-thatching to help your lawn recover.
